Training Battle #2. Situation: Hyperion vs. Hyperion. No fighters. 4 map sheets 2x2 (A,B,D,E). Vessels begin in opposite corners. Initial speed: Up to 7. The Juicy Bits: Hyperion #1 (H1) began at speed 7 and Hyperion #2 (H2) at speed 5. For the first turn, range was closed. At the beginning of the second turn, H2 made a turn to starboard and H1 continued forward. During the third turn H1 turned to starboard and two vessel ended up facing each other at a range of 2 hexes. H1 fired everything that could bear. H2 fired the forward pulse cannon, the plasma cannons, heavy lasers in raking mode, and particle beams. H1 used its interceptors against H2's plasma cannons. H2's interceptors, through a slight rule confusion, were set to offensive. Both ships took heavy damage. The only system left functioning was a retro on each ship with H2 taking an Efficiency critical. On turn 4 the ships each reduced speed by 1. They ended up 8 hexes from one another. Each ship fired the rear lasers. Both ships hit with both lasers. The aft structure was destroyed on both ships, causing both captain to retire from the battle. Analysis: The Hyperions were evenly matched, as is to be expected. Attacks to the rear seem to be particularly effective. It was a quick and brutal fight. -Todd Dennis "If you get the funny feeling that you're being watched, well... that's going into your file." -Dennis Miller
