Umm, asteroid fields are actually not very chaotic at all. In an asteroid field, all asteroids would be moving in the same diretion at the same speed. Now I guess they could be having a battle in a protoplanetary system which would be real crazy. However, why would anyone chose to fight to protect a protoplanetary system? I don't know other than maybe someone knew their best chance of survival was of escaping into a protoplanetary system. Maybe pirates perhaps could have a base in one.
