Please consider this a scratch pad for HFG scenarios. You'll see a lot of "probably" and "maybe" while I think these through. First pass through each battle is from a top-down perspective with each element equal to a brigade. I intend to take a second pass over each battle to adjust the number of elements based on corps strengths. Sickles' III Corps at Gettysburg is a good example of this necessity. The top-down pass results in a corps with 6 Mini elements, compared to the 9 elements in II Corps. But, both corps had 9-10,000 infantry under arms.

A word on the philosophy behind the historic battles. Since HFG is about army command, I believe the player should be presented with the same grand tactical problem that the commanding general faced, not be trapped into simply replaying the solution the commanding general implemented. Take the Battle of Franklin for example. I don't begin the scenario at 4pm with Cheatham's corps in the center, Stewart's on the right, and Forrest's cavalry divisions being split up in support of the infantry. That set-up reflects Gen. Hood's solution to the problem of attacking the Federal's in Franklin before they could get away. I choose to begin the scenario at 2pm, with the arrival of Stewart's corps. The CS player can choose to deploy this corps to the right, as Hood did, or maybe send Forrest's cavalry corps with infantry support on a flanking move across the fords, as Forrest advocated. Or, he may come up with another solution. For strategic reasons, Hood decided to fight at Franklin and without that decision, there is no Battle of Franklin. But the way the battle was fought is up to the player.

Discussion is welcome; e-mail me. If you use any of these OOBs, I'd love to hear how the game went. I'll even post your AAR!

On the subject of elite elements, one could argue that there are none in the WBTS. I don't have the impression of there being a unit who's defeat would have the same morale effect as the Old Guard at Waterloo. However, there are some WBTS brigades that consistently performed above average. Although not specifically chosen to lead assaults, it could be argued that units like the Texas brigade (Lee's Grenadier Guard) deserve being rated as elite for their ability to take heavy losses and not break. Based on Phil's lists, he would grade all units as regular after 1861, with a few exceptions for ironclads, US cavalry, and Nathan Bedford Forrest.

Future plans for this page involve adding more battles, adding maps, adding more pictures I've taken from the battlefields, and organizing the whole mess more attractively. Obviously, this page will eventually be split up to load more quickly. Personally, I'm more interested in the western battles, so these will get more attention initially. To see my HFG elements, click here or return to my gaming index page.

This page was last updated 01Jun04 and reflects the Jun03 version of the lists. Worked on reformatting Champion's Hill, added Franklin, added Mexican-American War notes, and updated list based scenarios.

Mexican-American War

Initial thoughts - scale changes to what I call battalion scale, where one element reperesents an infantry battalion or an artillery battery. US forces are aggression 3, maybe with Scott rated as brilliant. U.S. infantry as Bayonets; dragoons as Light Cavalry (until I find evidence of fighting dismounted); artillery as Smoothbore with flying artillery batteries as Horse. I originally considered Mexican infantry as Stoic, but after looking at Napoleonic Spanish and remembering Spanish roots, I classify Mexican units as follows: Aggression 0; HQs as Inert; Mexican infantry and militia as inferior Muskets; light infantry and zapadores as Muskets; artillery as Inferior Smootbore that moves at the pre-1756 rate; Tulancingo Cuirassiers as Heavy Cavalry; Gurard Hussars, Light Cavalry Regiment of Mexico, and Jalisco Lancers as Light Cavalry; all other line cavalry as Inferior Light Cavalry; presidials as Light Horse; mounted militia as Inferior Light Horse.

Palo Alto
U.S. - Agg:3; 1xHQ; 5xBayonet (; 1xInferior Light Cavalry; 2xSB Horse Artillery; 1xHvy SBArt; 1xSupply Base.
Mexican - Agg:0; 1xInert HQ; 4xInferior Muskets (1st, 4th, 6th, and 10th Infantry); 3xMuskets (2nd Light, Zapadores, Tampico Coast Guard Bn); 1xLight Cavalry (Lt Mtd Rgt of Mexico - double check); 2xInferior Light Cavalry (7th and 8th Cavalry); 1xLight Horse (presidials); 1xInferior Light Horse (militia cavalry); 2xInferior SBArt (moves as <1756).

1861

Lots of inferior troops. In fact, they're so green, I'd glue flocking to the figs!

1862

McClellan's penisular campaign offers some interesting "what-if" scenarios. I can see scenarios with siege guns, an observation balloon and perhaps the Monitor and/or the Galena supporting the Federal army. Fortifications for the South, with perhaps a large mounted contingent. Need to work up something more concrete based on the Seven Days.

Grant's operations along the Tennessee also offer scenarios that could include river gunboats supporting attacks against Southern fortifications. Forts Henry and Donelson, along with Island No. 10 spring to mind.

1862 armies should probably include 1/3 to 1/2 inferior troops, with an elite brigade or two, beginning to apprear.

Stone's River:
31 December 1862

Union
Army of the Cumberland (Roscrans): 1xCP, 1xDragoon. I don't see an artillery reserve at the army level. Dragoons are the combined Reserve and Zahm's cavalry "brigades". May want to slide this command in as part of the center, dropping the extra CP. Could also move the divisions of Rousseau (Thomas) and Van Cleve (Crittenden) into this command since they seem to have been deployed as a reserve

Left Wing (Crittenden): 1xCP, 8xMini, 3xMxd Art. Divisions of Wood, Palmer, and Van Cleve. Artillery is divisional level asset.

Center (Thomas): 1xCP, 8xMini, 2xMxd Art. Divisions of Rosseau and Negley. Artillery is divisional level asset.

Right Wing (McCook): 1xCP, 8xMini, 1xI-Mini, 3xMxd Art. Divisions of Davis, Johnson, and Sheridan. Artillery is divisional level asset. Inferior Mini is Willich's brigade, earning this rating for being caught by surprise.

Confederate
Army of Tennesee (Bragg): 1xHQ, 1xDragoon. Bragg was content to sit back and criticize. Dragoon is Wharton's cavalry brigade.

Polk's Corps: 1xCP, 8xBay, 2xSB Art. Divisions of Cheatham and Withers. Artillery is divisional level asset.

Hardee's Corps: 1xCP, 12xBay, 2xSB Art, 1xMxd Art. Divisions of Cleburne, Breckinridge, and McCown. Artillery is divisional level asset. With Breckinridge off on the right while McCown and Cleburne hold the left, there's an argument for splitting this into 2 commands, perhaps putting Breckinridge in under Bragg.

  • Includes Granger's Reserve "Corps".
  • Wilder's mounted infantry brigade graded as elite repeaters. On both days, they function as a fire brigade for Rosecrans and stop many CS attacks. Their willingness to attack Longstreet's wing on 20Sep and their belief that they can cut their through half the CS army, roll up Longstreet, and reach Thomas clinches this grading in my mind. Rosey used Wilder as a fire brigade, in effect detaching him from Thomas.
  • Strength estimates 3,913 and 3,600.
  • Artillery is an issue. The guns are present to provide the stated elements, but in practice, they weren't deployed as massed brigades. The battlefield terrain may be enough to limit artillery deployment., but playtesting is required.

Polk and Hill (Hardee) commanded the two corps that made up the AoT during 1863. Buckner, Walker, and Longstreet were essentially out-of-theater reinforcements. Hill was subordinated to Polk 20Sep. The "improved" command structure for 20Sep results from more units assigned to the "normal" CP (Longstreet). Need to consider Hoods units on the 19th.

1864

War weariness is setting in, particularly on the Union side. Large regiments of new recruits again show up in the armies, but a solid corps of veterans remains. Political back-biting in the Confederate Army of Tennesse continues to adversly effect that command, but the soldiers perform well on the battlefield. Red River campaign and operations along the Carolina coast could generate what-if battles with naval support. The Battle of the Crater could provide an interesting twist. Perhaps rate the orignal colored assault units as elite, not because of their skill, but due to the percieved poltical fallout of heavy losses in these unit. That could be worth the 2 element hit when one element is lost! Also, the mine explosion would have to be variable. More thought is needed here.
